Sky for All: A Community Planetarium Experience

Boundless Sky – A Sky Tour is a joint initiative of the Tamil Nadu Science Forum (TNSF) and Samatvam Trust aimed at popularizing astronomy among students, teachers, and the general public across Tamil Nadu. Recognizing astronomy as both the oldest and one of the most engaging branches of science, the program seeks to inspire curiosity, promote scientific thinking, and foster a sense of unity and perspective through understanding the universe.

The project combines district-level telescope distribution with a mobile planetarium outreach model. Telescopes have been provided to districts to conduct sky observation programs, while a specially equipped vehicle carrying a mobile planetarium, advanced telescope, virtual reality viewer, projectors, and audio systems enables immersive, multi-format learning experiences. During each visit, students can simultaneously engage in planetarium shows, audio-visual presentations, telescope demonstrations, and virtual reality sessions, ensuring wide participation.

Implemented in phases, the program began with training resource persons and planning activities, followed by district-level outreach targeting 228 schools and over 50,000 beneficiaries. Although initially delayed due to academic schedules, the program resumed in mid-2025 and has reached thousands of students through events such as the Thulir Science Festival in Tiruppur district.

Beyond knowledge dissemination, the initiative emphasizes distinguishing astronomy from astrology and promoting scientific temper in line with Article 51-A(h) of the Constitution of India. Overall, the program represents an innovative and large-scale effort to bring experiential science education to diverse communities, nurturing curiosity and critical thinking among learners.
