Building Employability Skills

Society for Reaching the Unreached (SRU India) is a not for profit organization, registered under the Societies Registration Act XXI of 1860. The organization came into existence when a group of experienced professionals in the areas of health, nutrition and environment realized that there is need for coordinated initiatives at the district, state and national level to assist national policies and programs in reaching the most underprivileged and unreached populations.

SRU works in the areas of Health and Nutrition, Hygiene and Sanitation, Domestic and Sexual Violence, Enhancing Employability Skills and Environmental Protection.

Samatvam Trust has financially supported SRU in their project “Building Capacities of 1000 Adolescent Girls on ‘Employability Skills during their Formative Stage of Life’ from 2 Low Resource Districts of India.” The project will be implemented at Banda district of Uttar Pradesh and Kishanganj District of Bihar.

SRU proposes to orient 1000 adolescent girls (14-15 years) on employability, over a period of 3 months. The focus of this program is on personality and skill development, communication, building self esteem /self- confidence, exposure to opportunities in the job market and to build community and family support system for girls to work outside the home.

The sessions will include:-

Personality development – Knowing about self, self-esteem and self-confidence.

Communication – Expressing our own mind, negotiations and problem-solving.

Presenting Self – Opportunity for the future, exposure to entrepreneurship options and resume development.

All orientation will be based on participatory learning methods. A pre and post-test questionnaire will be administered at the beginning and end of the sessions to understand and gauge the impact and effectiveness of the program. Sensitization meetings with groups of parents and other key stakeholders of the village/localities is also incorporated in the program.

The aim of the program is to orient the girls on key issues related to employability, create a conducive environment at the family and community levels to let them seek employment and pave the way to make collective decisions for seeking livelihood other than traditional patterns. The project seeks to bring learning and skill development among the girls.
