Vidya & Child is a project managed by Jayaprakash Narayan Memorial Trust registered as a public Charitable Trust in New Delhi. Vidya & Child provides integrated education for holistic development to first generation learners and supports children from marginalized communities through their education life cycle. Majority of these children have parents who are illiterate or semi-literate and are domestic servants, industrial workers, rickshaw-pullers, street vendors, plumbers and carpenters. Over the last 24 years, Vidya & Child have been able to connect with the parents who now send their daughters too to study and learn at an early age. Child centric, value integrated holistic learning and a shared vision with each parent to identify and explore the uniqueness within each child are the guiding principles on which this organization is founded. Vidya & Child has established a model of engagement to ensure that each child completes school education, is skill enabled through professional or vocational education. This organization started in 1998 with 2 children and now works with over 1700 children across 4 locations in Delhi/NCR through its school programme and after school support centres. There are over 600 children who have been mainstreamed into formal schools and close to 300 children have finished Class XII and are all pursuing higher studies.
Besides a school program from Nursery to Class 8, they run an after school support program to give academic support for Class 9 to 12 children in order to reinforce concepts taught in school. Career counselling and mentoring for the future and the NIOS Program form part of their activities. For over-aged children who are not able to go to a regular school they have started a foundation program. Financial and mentoring support for higher education, professional and vocational skill enablement programs, and programs in creative arts and performing arts are some of the other areas in which Vidya & Child gives support to children. Samatvam Trust has made a financial contribution of Rs. 5 lakhs this financial year to support the activities of Vidya & Child at their centre at Barola, Uttar Pradesh.
