Empowering the Teaching-Learning Process

Eklavya is an NGO based in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh which works in the field of education.

The aim of Eklavya is to make long-term and holistic changes in education. Teachers and grass root level education activists are crucial stake-holders and potential change-makers. Hence, Eklavya seeks to empower teaching-learning processes at all levels – formal government structure to collaborative self-initiated spaces. This has prompted them to propose a sustained engagement with the teaching community through a process of critical dialogue, collaborative learning and action. To prepare children who are able to ask questions, think critically, compare different situations and analyse them, we need teachers who are themselves able to practice the same. However, most teachers – government as well as private are working in an environment that is not conducive to critical thinking, self-reflection, and questioning. Apart from this, the teacher is over-burdened and there is distrust and cynicism all around. Hence there is a need to engage with teachers’ concerns, to work with them and strengthen them as a community, engaging both with issues of society and with inclusive pedagogy in a diverse classroom. In addition to helping and encouraging teachers with a continuous process of learning and enrichment in the subject areas, there is also a need to work with them in some core life skill areas. Only that would ensure that they would be both professional and humane.

With these goals in mind, Eklavya has designed 4 courses over a period of 2 years (November 2022 to October 2024) entitled -‘Creating Learning Opportunities for Teachers’; in order to build capacities in teachers and enable them to enhance their classroom interaction and engagement. This course will help teachers navigate through a process of acquiring and applying the awareness, knowledge, skills and attitudes to develop healthy identities, manage emotions and achieve personal and collective goals.

Samatvam Trust has contributed a sum of Rs 7 lakhs to this endeavour of Eklavya.
